ثل الرواية جزءا ثانيا لرواية تراوري الشهيرة( ميمونة) لكنها مستقلة بأحداثها وأفكارها وتقنياتها ولغتها، غير أنها تمثل محاولة من تراوري لتعميق خطابه الروائي ومساءلة الهوية. ومن أجواء الرواية: (وحين شعّت في الطائرة رائحة كلام كاوية، ازدررتُ لعابي وقلتها له (لسَّاعَكْ مكّاوي)، وأنا أتوقّف عن تبادل القبلات معه، وبعد السؤال عن الحال والأحوال وتاريخ الغياب، استعدنا وجوها قديمة، وأسماء موغلة في التعتيق، حتّى بدا لحديثنا رائحة أزقّة ضيقة كان الكلام فيها يكوي حوائطها، أليس مثيرا، أنّ وجهاً يفتح خزائن مدينةٍ تراصّت داخلك على مدى العمر، دون أنْ تشعر لحظة بأنّ الحوائط القديمة تتكدّس بين ضلوعك، وتستنفد من روحك ماءها، وأنا كنت أقول بأنّ الرحلة ستطير إلى الدار البيضاء، ولم أستغرب وجود الوجه الذي تأكله لحيةٌ معنا، لأنّي سأعرف أنّ زوجه مغربية، وبعد ودٍ، سأرويه، انْهارت كلّ الأسوار بيننا، وانكمش الوحش الزائف فيه لحظة أبصر أن الحياة يمكن أن تسعنا بهدوء دون أنْ نحتاج كل هذا التجهّم).
