"شجرة الجوز" أو شجرة كهدار كما سميت فيما بعد من قِبل أهل تلك القرية البعيدة القائمة على عين ماء عذب وغزير، هي رمز للحب والوفاء الذي تمثله إبنة الآغا (بديع) الذي يحكم القرية والذي كان في صراع مع غيره من أغوات المنطقة على النفوذ والسلطة لزيادة رقعة القرى التي يستولون عليها وحكمها. ولأن كهدار من أبناء الفلاحين، رفضه الآغا، وتخلص منه، فلم يبقَ لتوتي خان إلا الذكريات التي تجمعها به تحت شجرة الجوز، فأصبحت ترتادها، تناجيها، وهي مستسلمة لقدرها، حتى ساءت حالتها الأمر الذي أدى إلى وفاتها. في تلك اللحظة أدرك الآغا وزوجته اللذان كانا في غاية الحزن أن الأقدار تنتقم منهما وتعلمهما دروسها الصعبة والشاقة، "ولأول مرة تجرأت خورشي خان بالتطرق إلى موضع حب إبنتها لكهدار حيث كالت اللوم لزوجها وإبنها سليم ثم عادت لتلوم نفسها ايضاً بتجاهلهم جميعاً عواطف توتي خان والقيود التي كانوا يفرضونها عليها (...)".
وبعد "شجرة الجوز" رواية غنية بالأحداث والتفاصيل والوقائع التي تكشف عن مرحلة الصراع الخفي بين حكم الأغوات والفلاحين، رصد من خلالها الراوي مجتمع معين ورصد إيقاع تحولاته، بأسلوب الفن الروائي الأكثر ملاءمة للتعبير عن درجة التشابك والتعقيد في العلاقات بين السلطة والناس، وكثيراً ما تم تقديم الوقائع من خلال شخصيات وأماكن وهمية ما يعكس مهنية واضحة في فن السرد الروائي.
