درس في بريسلاو، وماربورغ، وميونخ.
حصل على الدكتوراه الأولى بإشراف بول ناتورب Natorp، وعلى الدكتوراه المؤهلة للتدريس في الجامعة بإشراف هيدغر في جامعة ماربورغ سنة 1929، وصار أستاذ كرسي للفلسفة في جامعة لايبتسغ سنة 1939، ثم انتقل إلى جامعة فرانكفورت في سنة 1943، فإلى جامعة هيدلبرغ في سنة 1949.
وقد شغل منذ 1953 منصب رئاسة تحرير المجلة الفلسفية.

يشتمل هذا الكتاب على أهم مقالات الفيلسوف المعاصر جادامر فى تفسير ظواهر الفن والجمال. إنه يكشف لنا فى هذه المقالات عن أزمه وعينا الجمالى الاغترابى الذى أصبح ينظر إلى الفن باعتباره شكلاً جماليًّا منعزلاً ومستقلاً عن سائر أشكال حياتنا الإنسانيه؛ ولذلك يحاول جادامر أن يعيد تأسيس وعينا الجمالى، وأن يكشف لنا عن حقيقه الجميل فى الفن التى لا يمكن فهمها بمنأى عن أشكال حياتنا الإنسانيه. من هنا كان هذا الكتاب جديرًا باهتمام المشتغلين بشئون الفن على المستوى الإبداعى أو النقدى أو التنظيرى.
