الكتاب صنعة عبد الله الجبوري، الكتاب طبعة أولى. للعرب تراث شعري ضخم عتيد، وصل إلينا أقلّه موزعاً في الدواوين وكتب اللغة والأدب والتاريخ، وقد نشطت جمهرة من أجلّة علماء القرن الثالث للهجرة، إلى جمع أشعار الجاهلين والإسلاميين في مجاميع ودواوين، وعلى رأس هذه الجمهرة: أبو سعيد السكري، وأبو بكر الصولي. وقد ألقت يد النسيان والكوارث بجملة كبيرة من هذه الدواوين في مراقد البلى وأرماس العبث والضياع. ولم نعرف عنها إلا أخباراً متناثرة في أمهات المظان ودواوين اللغة وأصول التاريخ... ومن هذه الدواوين التي عفي عليها الزمن، ديوان "أبي الشيص" الذي لم يبق من شعره إلا نذر تحتجنه شتيت المصادر الأصول... هذه المختارات التي يضمها هذا الكتاب لملمها "عبد الله الجبوري" من بطون الأسفار اللغوية والتأريخية والأدبية، قديمة وحديثة هدفه أن ييسر على الباحثين والأدباء الرجوع إلى هذه القصائد الشعرية الهامة من تراث أبي الشيص، هذا وقد التزم الباحث بعد أن التقط أشعار أبي الشيص وجمع أخباره باعتماد المنهج الآتي: أولاً: قام بترتيب المقطعات والقصائد ترتيباً هجائياً، وجعل تخريج كل نص منها في الهامش. ثانياً: شرح ما خفي من لفظ النصوص، وعرف بالأعلام التي وردت فيها. ثالثاً: ضم إلى شعر أبي الشيص، القصيدة (الدعدية)، وهي قصيدة تنازعها أكثر من شاعر. رابعاً: الحق في آخر شعر أبي الشيص ما وقف عليه من نصوص تضمنت أخباره، لقفها من الأصول القديمة التي عرضت له، بترجمة أو خبر. خامساً: جعل القصيدة (الدعدية) في آخر الديوان. سادساً: أطلق على عمله هذا اسم "ديوان أبي الشيص"... أسوةً بالقدامى الذين نهدوا إلى جمع شعر الشعراء الذين لم يتركوا شعرهم مجموعاً في ديوان...
