وجاء في تعريف الكتاب ما يلي: يرصد المؤلِّف أهم العوامل البيئية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية والسياسية والثقافية التي كان يتم من خلالها، في حقب مختلفة من تاريخ مصر العربية، إرساء أُسس للتكامل الاجتماعي ببين المسلمين والقبط. ويقدّر المؤلّف أن هذه العوامل يتعيّن أن تؤخذ على الدوام بالحسبان عند محاولة تحديد خطوط عامة لرؤية مستقبلية لسيرورة التفاعل بين المسلمين والقبط. فواقع الأمر أن هذه العوامل تشكّل في مجموعها الخبرة التاريخية المشتركة للمصريين، ومن ثم لا يجوز إسقاطها، لأن محصلتها النهائية تمثلت في ظاهرتين رئيسيتين: الأولى، هي ظاهرة التجانس بين سكان البلاد من مسلمين ومسيحيين، والثانية، هي ظاهرة الإحساس والوعي بالمصير المشترك، وبأن هذا الوطن لا يمكن تقسيمه. وفي السعي إلى نشدان تماسك المجتمع ككل، وتحقيق تكامل قوي بين المسلمين والمسيحيين، يدعو المؤلّف إلى نقد عدد من المفاهيم في اتجاه إعادة ضبطها وإغنائها بمضامين جديدة؛ ومن هذه المفاهيم ذات الصلة بفصول هذا الكتاب، (1) التشديد على مفهوم التنمية المستقلة من حيث ارتباطه بالديمقراطية التي تعتمد على المواطن كمشارك وفاعل في صناعة القرار، (2) التشديد على المحتوى التقدمي للقومية العربية، وذلك من حيث إنها تشكّل النقيض لاستمرار قيام الهياكل الاجتماعية المتخلّفة من قبلية وعشائرية وطائفية؛ (3) أن تقوم السلطة العتيدة بتضمين الدستور والقوانين النصوص التي تستلهم ميثاق حقوق الإنسان، وغيره من المواثيق، تلك التي تقرّ مبدأ المواطنة، وضمان حرية العقيدة، وحق الجماهير في اختيار حكّامهم، والتعددية السياسية، وتداول السلطة شرعاً.
