يتخذ الراوي من شخصية "سعود الخير الله" أنموذجاً للمثقف العضوي الذي يمثل بلده خير تمثيل بحسب مقولة "يجب أن تكون خير سفير لبلدك؟
في رحلة عمل مضنية يجوب الراوي شوارع اليمن الضيقة، مروراً بالدكاكين الشعبية المشرعة أبوابها والفاقعة باللون الأزرق والمصبوغة بنور الشمس. يحاول البحث عن الحقيقة، حقيقة ما آلت إليه الأوضاع في بلاد العرب من فساد، وطبقية، وطراعات ايديولوجية يكون فيها السلاح هو المتكلم الوحيد من جيل إلى جيل. يقول: "... أليس الدكتاتوريون هم أول من نادى بالديمقراطية لممارسة ديكتاتوريتهم، بإشعال الحروب منذ القدم بدعوى تحقيق العدل والمساواة والأمن والحرية للشعوب؟! فكيف يكون تحقيق كل ذلك بالحرب التي هي في جوهرها القتل وفي ظاهرها التدمير؟!
هذه الرواية ليست مجرد رحلة في الأماكن المختلفة عبر أزمنة مختلفة بل هي رحلة في الشخصيات أيضاً، الناس البسطاء، كيف يعيشون، كيف يتابعون حياتهم في هكذا أوضاع، إنها رواية تحكي قصة الإنسان العربي في فضاء جغرافي وتاريخي وإنساني أكثر فوضى...
هذا، وقد قسم الراوائي محتويات كتابه إلى أربعة أقسام جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "تجفيف النبته"، "مضغ القطاف"، امتصاص العصارة"، "قذف المعتصر" و"الرسالة السرعدية".
