طيرت الملك في سماوات الله الواسعة عشر سنوات، في غمضة عين استجوبني الأمن، متهكاً أني كنت أنوي إسقاطه من طائرته الملكية، شيع أني يأعدم، أقسم آخرون بأني في حكم المؤبد، لكن الله أبطل الإشاعة والقسم، جعلتني الحياة الحديثة في حكم الباحث عن عمل، وجدت كمزرعة جدي تبحث عن عامل وطني، استزرعتها بطيخاً، فآوتني حياة الأحرار الكادحين. وصلت مسجداً قريباً من سوق قديم، كانت الساعة لم تصل الرابعة مساءً، تذكرت الملك عندما رأيت اسمه في حائط من رخام، يفيد حائط الذكرى أن المسجد بني على نفقته الخاصة، وافتتح ظهر يوم الجمعة تحت رعايته الكريمة، أرعبني اسمه، تذكرت سنوات السجن، قبل أن يقتله السرطان الذي تلذذ بجسمه، تم الإفراج عن المعتقلين وأحلنا نحن عسكري الأرض الطيبة إلى التقاعد، بما أن راتبي غير كاف لإعاشة أولادي كان علي استزراع الأرض، وبيع البطيخ، كلما نضج واصفر لونه الخارجي. صليت، ووقفت أدعو أمام حائط الذكرى على أعوانه الباقين في أرضنا الطيبة. أوقفت سيارتي في سكة تؤدي إلى السوق، وجدت الناس متجمعين حول فواكه وخضار، ناديت على رجل أسود، أخبرته أن معي بطيخاً للبيع، أنزلنا البطيخ وراح يرفع صوته في الناس.
