في هذا الكتاب يقدم الروائي "طارق الجارد" قصصاً قصيرة محكمة النصوص راسمة شكلها ومضمونها القصصيين في بعدها الإنساني العميق. وفي سرده القصصي يرسم لنا "الجارد" بدقة نماذج من البشر تتشابه طبقياً وإجتماعياً في موقعها وواقعها، ولكنها تتفاوت في طريقة رؤيتها لذاتها وللحياة بكل شعابها وتعقيداتها الإيديولوجية والثقافية. عند قراءتنا للنصوص نجد أن الروائي يقودنا في قصة "حكاية رجل على هيئة ساعة" إلى موضوع الوقت وأهميته في حياة الإنسان، فيضعنا أمام موضوعة الإنسان والزمن في نص مفتوح ومجزأ إلى ستة أجزاء، حيث تتطور الشخصية التي اختارها الروائي في كل يوم، بشكل أميز عن سابقيه، عندما يروي لنا حكاية موظف صغير في شركة، كان لا يهمه سوى اللحظة الحاضرة، كيف سيتمتع بها ولا يخطط للمستقبل، وفي لحظة ما بين الماضي والحاضر، أدرك صاحبنا أن الزمن لا يتوقف إنما يقفز بسرعة، يقول: "أصبحت مهووساً بالمستقبل، ماذا سأصبح، ماذا سأفعل؟ كيف أخطط، وهكذا أصبح هذا الموظف يعمل بجدية، فنراه يقول: "فعلاً أصبحت كما عقرب الساعة الصغير، أعمل بصمت ... رأوني قد سبقتهم، وأدركوا قيمتي ..."، تتوالى الأيام فيصبح هذا الموظف الصغير عضواً في لجنة حكومية لمراجعة بعض القرارات، وذلك بعد أن قرر مديره انتدابه لذلك المنصب مكافأة له على اجتهاده، وهذا يعني أن قطار الزمن لا يتوقف لأحد، ولا ينتظر أحداً، وهذا ما أراد أن يقوله الروائي ... أما في قصصه اللاحقة يدخل الروائي في دغل العلاقات الإجتماعية، وما يمكن أن تتركه هذه العلاقات من تجريحات وربما من اعوجاجات في بنية الروح الإنسانية، ويمكن أن تخلفه من التباسات، وهذه القصص جاءت بعناوين مختلفة نذكر منها: "محمدين" ، "الرؤية التي حدثت على مقعد بكامبردج" ، "أبو لسان" ، "ماريا" ، " الفتى الحرباء" ، "محصلة الكترون وحيد في مكانين" ، "مربعات متناقضة" (...) .. الخ".
