السكوت في بعض المواقف يجيء أدق تعبيراً عما تختلج به نفوسنا، وتزدحم به رؤوسنا من أفكار، وكان سكوتنا يجسم معاني كثيرة وكبيرة وهائلة، صمتي كان يبدو وكأنه اعتذار رقيق أقدمه لـ «سي معتوق» ليغفر لي سؤالي الجارح الذي كدّر صفوه، فما كان يجب أن أسأله، فلو كان له أولاد لأراحوه بالتأكيد، أما صمت «سي معتوق» فكان صمت الإنسان العاجز عن التعبير عما بداخله من انفعالات وأحاسيس وأفكار، غير أن ما كان يبديه صمته لأقل الناس فهماً، هو مدى الألم الذي كان يعانيه الرجل في تلك اللحظات. رأيت أن أبدّد ذلك الصمت الرهيب بأن أفعل أي شيء، إلاَّ أن «سي معتوق»، على مل يبدو لاحظ حيرتي، فبدأ يغالب الألم بابتسامة حزينة، حاول بها أن يحيرني من ارتباكي
