يأتي هذا الكتاب من ضمن سلسلة كتب (أشهر الأسرار العالمية) لمؤلفها جولي واغنر، وهذا هو الكتاب الأول وعنوانه "أشهر السرقات" يحيط الكتاب بجرائم السرقة في عصور مختلفة وبالتحديد السنوات الثلاثة آلاف الماضية، في بلدان مثل اليونان القديمة، وإنجلترا، وإيرلندة، وأميركا وغيرها من بلدان، ويروي مؤلفه قصصاً حقيقية قام بها قطاع الطرق وقراصنة البحار، وحتى علماء استغلوا علمهم في تجميع الأموال.
كما يستعرض الكتاب أساليب القبض على المجرمين والعصابات، ويكشف عن أشهر السرقات في التاريخ ومنها "سرقة مصرف دربسدايل" في العام (1855)، وعمليات السطو على مصرف فيرست ناشيونال في لونغ فيو، تكساس، في العام (1894)، وسرحة لوحة الموناليزا في العام (1911)، لمدة عامين، ثم إستردادها، وسرقة شركة (رابل أيس) الأميركية في العام (1934)، وعملية برينكس - بنك في العام (1983)، ومعلومات أخرى ذات صلة.
تحت عنوان "جرائم العصور الفيكتوري" نقرأ حادثة طريفة جرت في محكمة أولد بايلي: "خلال عشرينات القرن التاسع عشر، حاز السيد جاستيس غراهام شهرة في أنه القاضي الأكثر لباقة في محكمة أولد بايلي، في إحدى المرات، حضر أمامه ستة عشر متهماً باللصوصية والسرقة.
وخلال قراءة حيثيات الحكم سقط من تعداد أسماء المتهمين اسم أحدهم سهواً، وبعد أن أعلن الحكم عليهم بالإعدام، تنفس الرجل السادس عشر الصعداء، تنبه كاتب المحكمة لهذا الأمر ولفت إنتباه القاضي إلى أمر الرجل ذاك، ويدعى جون روبينز... وبطريقة هادئة تماماً، قال القاضي: "يا سيد روبينز... أنا في غاية الأسف للحيرة التي أوقعتك منها، فقد سقط سهواً اسمك في لائحة المحكومين بالموت، وأؤكد لك أن ذلك لم يكن مقصوداً وأرجو أن تعفو عن خطأي، ولا يسعني إلاّ أن أضيف إلى بالغ أسفي وإعتذاري حقيقة أنك سوف تشنق إلى جانب هؤلاء الرجال غداً صباحاً".
عناوين الكتاب: 1-إن اعتقدتم أن هذا عصر التسيّب، 2-الغرب أكثر توحشاً، 3-جرائم العصر الفيكتوري، 4-عصر الكشف، 5-عصر العصابات.
