ما تزال ثلث الجرائم حتى اليوم لا تجد طريقها إلى الحل، فتبقى على غموضها، إذ في ثمانينات القرن العشرين ما يزال مجرم الجرائم المتسلسلة يضرب عشوائياً مثل "قاتل النهر الأخضر" في سياتل الأميركية الذي قتل عشرين امرأة على الأقل، أي ما يوازي أربعة أضعاف ما قتله "جاك المجرم" 1888، في لندن. لهذا ننظر إلى القرن التاسع عشر بحنين إلى الأيام الخوالي فنجد بعض الجاذبية حتى في جرائمه. لكن بالرغم من ضآلة القدرات البوليسية في ذلك الأوان، قليلة هي الجرائم المشهورة التي بقيت غامضة، أهمها قضية وفاة إحدى البائعات التي استلهمها ادغار آلان بو وجعلها أساس قصته "لغز ماري روجيه" وإن خبأ سحر لغز ماري روجيه، فما يزال سر موت شالز برافو عام 1876 يحير الباحثين حتى هذه اللحظات. أما قضية ليزي بوردين، فهي أبرز الجرائم في أميركا في العام 1892 وهذا الكتاب يكشف عن أشهر الجرائم الغامضة التي حصلت في القرن التاسع عشر وفي أوائل القرن العشرين في أميركا وفي بريطانيا وكذلك عن تلك التي وقعت في أماكن مختلفة من العالم.
