يختلف هذا الكتاب عن كتب النظرية الكلاسيكية الإجتماعية بوصفه كتاباً يدور حول نظرية التكوين (التأسيس) الإجتماعي، وإستخدام مصطلح "تكويني" (تأسيسي) هنا هو للإشارة إلى أصحاب النظريات الذين ساهموا في تكوين (تأسيس) البنية المميزة التي تتطور فيها النظرية والبحث السوسيولوجي إلى تخصصات ممأسسة متميزة.
والفترة المقصودة هنا هي من القرن التاسع عشر والنصف الأول من القرن العشرين، إنها تلك المرحلة التي تتميز بالإهتمام المشترك لتأسيس الأطر الصارمة لأي نقاش نظري ولأي تنظير إجتماعي.
وبما أن النظرية الإجتماعية تختلف عن علم الإجتماع الذي بدوره يركز في وضع الصياغات العامة للنظريات الإجتماعية، فإن هذا الكتاب لا يقتصر على علماء الإجتماع الرئيسيين، وإنما يضم بعض واضعي النظريات من خارج علم الإجتماع، منهم المحللون النفسيون، وعلماء السياسة، وعلماء الأنثروبولوجيا، وآخرون ممن ساهموا في تطور علم الإجتماع.
يتوزع الكتاب وفقاً لقائمة تضم خمسين مفكراً هم حصيلة تصويت ثم على قائمة مفصلة أكبر من قبل لجنة متخصصة، هذه القائمة تضم مداخل بأسماء المفكرين، ومرتبة أبجدياً بحسب الإسم الثاني، كما ينتهي كل مدخل بأهم أعمال المفكر، موضوع المدخل، إضافة إلى قراءات مقترحة لها صلة بموضوع البحث.
