يحكي الكاتب بأسلوب مختصر صدامات القوتين العسكريتين البلجيكية والعربية في الكونغو في منعطف القرن التاسع عشر. ويعرض وجهة النظر الأوروبية المحضة، في مواجهة صارخة مع رواية التاجر العماني والقائد العسكري حمد المرجبي التي أوردها في مذكراته. ويعرفنا النص بتفاصيل حياة سكان الكونغو في ذلك الوقت. والكتاب يحمع بين الأنثربولوجيا والتاريخ والسيرة الذاتية، ووسط ذلك يظهر جهد المرجبي اللامع بالتجارة والاستكشاف، وإن كانت نتائج عمله قد استفاد منها المستكشفون الأوروبيون فجُيّرت لمصلحتهم، نظراً لانعدام التوازن القائم. أما سيدني هايند (1863 - 1930) فهو طبيب انكليزي برتبة ضابط في قوات دولة الكونغو الحرة الخاضعة لبلجيكا. انشغل بالإضافة الى الطب بالجهدين العسكري والاستكشافي. يحمل خطاب هايند الكثير من مفاهيم نهاية القرن التاسع عشر وارتباطه الشخصي بالمصالح الغربية القائمة حينذاك وانحيازه الفكري والعلمي لها واستعداء الأفارقة ضد العرب، وتحميلهم الكثير من إرث تجارة الرقيق. على أن تلك الروح لا تخفي جوانب تحديثية للقوة الأوروبية أو قدرة المؤلف الكتابية.
