يقول كوامي نكروما في مقدمة كتابه "تحدي الكونغو" بأن القضايا في غانا انكشفت بوضوح مفاجئ وعنيف بالاستيلاء على السلطة بدعم من الاستعماريين الجدد المحيطين الذين لا يرون أية طريق أخرى لتحقيق أهدافهم في السيطرة والاستغلال. إن غانا، وهي في واجهة النضال من أجل أفريقيا الحرة الموحدة، وعلى وشك إنجاز اختراق صناعي عظيم يؤمن الاستقلال الاقتصادي الحقيقي، أصبحت نموذجاً شديد الخطورة لبقية أفريقيا إذا أتيح له الاستمرار في ظل حكومة اشتراكية التوجه.
ويضيف بأن المأساة في غانا، وخطورة ما تنطوي عليه من نكسة للثورة الأفريقية، مؤقتتان، على أن ذلك لا يخفف الجريمة. فهؤلاء الأفراد لم يخونوا الغانيين والإفريقيين في كل مكان فقط، بل جميع الفقراء والمضطهدين في العالم، بصورة غير مباشرة. من خلال كلمات نكروما هذه تتضح بعض معالم القضية التي أراد إثارتها وتحليلها في كتابه هذا. والتي تتمحور حول الدور الذي لعبه وتلعبه القوى الخارجية في سبيل الهيمنة على الدول الإفريقية، وكانت الكونغو نموذجاً وضحية لهذه القوى والبيان ذلك عمد المؤلف أولاً إلى تقديم عرض تاريخي مفصل وموثق لمرحلة حاسمة وخطيرة من الأحداث التي تعرضت لها الكونغو منذ استقلالها عام 1960، وحتى انقلاب موبوتو 1965 مروراً بمأساة اغتيال المناضل الإفريقى باتريس لومومبا عام 1961. ليكشف من ثم بجلاء ووضوح حادين دور الضغوط الأجنبية، والتدخلات السياسية والعسكرية للقوى الاستعمارية الأوربية والأميركية ويربط بين جشعها وتكالبها وبين وحشيتها وعجرفتها من أجل إبقاء واستمرار سيطرتها على مناطق النفوذ الغنية بمواردها.
