سيجد القارئ المهتم بتاريخ أميركا الجنوبية هذه الرواية بالغة الإثارة. فالكاتبة التي قضت فترة صباها هناك، جمعت تنوعا من المعلومات التاريخية، وصاغتها في حبكة قصصية مشوقة تجمع بين الدراما والكوميديا السوداء. تركز الرواية بالدرجة الأولى على شخصية فرانكو سولانو لوبيز، ثم تطور الحبكة حول عشيقته الأيرلندية الشقراء إيلا لاينش التي قد يماثل موقعها ونفوذها دور إيفا بيرون في الأرجنتين. الخط الأساسي الذي ترتكز عليه الرواية هو مذكرات إيلا ورسائلها إلى صديقتها الدوقة الفرنسية، وما تضمنته هذه الرسائل من أوصاف لفترة مكوثها في باراغواي وللحادثات التي شهدتها إيلا، ويستشف منها الحيوية التي تمتعت بها رغم الظروف المحيطة. التقى فرانكو بإيلا عندما كان سفيرا لوالده الدكتاتور في فرنسا. وكان يسعى لأن يغير من وضع بلاده ويجعلها في مصاف الدول المتقدمة في أمريكا الجنوبية، وأن يجعل من عاصمة بلادة أسنثيون مثل باريس. لكن ما أن تسلم الحكم بعد وفاة أبيه حتى أفصح عن دمويته وشخصيته المستبدة، فانتهى به الأمر إلى توريط بلاده في ما عرف بحرب التحالف الثلاثي مع جيرانها، التي قضت على الأخضر واليابس ودمرت البلاد وشعبها.
