مؤرخ مصري معاصر، رأس قسم التاريخ الحديث في كلية الأداب بجامعة عين شمس، له صفحة خاصة في جريدة الأهرام بعنوان الأهرام ديوان الحياة المعاصرة وله العديد من المؤلفات والكتب كما انه عضو لجنة التاريخ بالمجلس الأعلى للثقافة، وعضو مجلس الشوري، والمجلس الأعلي للصحافة.
حصل على ليسانس الآداب قسم تاريخ من كلية الآداب بجامعة عين شمس سنة 1955 ثم ماجستير التاريخ الحديث من جامعة عين شمس سنة 1963 ودكتوراه التاريخ ال مؤرخ مصري معاصر، رأس قسم التاريخ الحديث في كلية الأداب بجامعة عين شمس، له صفحة خاصة في جريدة الأهرام بعنوان الأهرام ديوان الحياة المعاصرة وله العديد من المؤلفات والكتب كما انه عضو لجنة التاريخ بالمجلس الأعلى للثقافة، وعضو مجلس الشوري، والمجلس الأعلي للصحافة.
حصل على ليسانس الآداب قسم تاريخ من كلية الآداب بجامعة عين شمس سنة 1955 ثم ماجستير التاريخ الحديث من جامعة عين شمس سنة 1963 ودكتوراه التاريخ الحديث من جامعة عين شمس سنة 1967.
فقدت ذاكرة مصر أحد أشهر مؤرخيها المعاصرين برحيل المؤرخ الكبير الدكتور يونان رزق في السابعة من صباح الثلاثاء 15 يناير 2008 بعد صراع طويل مع قلبه المريض. وشيعت جنازتة من كنيسة السيدة العذراء بمدينة نصر، وأقيم العزاء بالكنيسة نفسها مساء.
جائزة الدولة التقديرية في العلوم الاجتماعية عام 1995
جائزة مبارك في العلوم الاجتماعية عام 2004

يستدعى عنوان هذا الكتاب عند مطالعته للوهلة الأولى ، أحد الأعمال الخالدة للدكتور جمال حمدان "شخصية مصر " ولا غزو فى ذلك ، فكلاهما ينصب على شخصية مصر المتفردة التى حققت لها المكانة ، والاضطلاع بدور الريادة ، وكلا الكاتبين محب لهذا الوطن ، مهموم بقضاياه ، معتز بمكانته . وذا كانت موسوعة د.جمال حمدان _وبحكم تخصصه _تقدم لنا دراسة فى عبقرية المكان ، فان كتاب د.يونان _وبحكم تخصصه ايضا _ يحاول الإحاطه بضلعى المثلث الأخرين (الزمان والإنسان ) لتكتمل بذلك مقومات المكانة . وهكذا يحاول الكاتب رصد ملامح "مكانة مصر " عبر الفترات التاريخية المتعاقبة بدءا من اكتسابها للمكانة العسكرية فى عهد محمد على ، والمدنية فى عهد اسماعيل ، والشعبية إبان الثورة العرابية ،مرورا باحتلال مصر وإعلان الحماية البريطانية مع الحرب العالمية الأولى والتى اندلعت فى أعقابها ثورة 1919 ،وتنامى المد الوطنى حتى قيام ثورة 1952 ،ويمتد ليشمل دورها حتى الفترة التى تلى إغتيال السادات عام 1981.
