الردَ على كتابات "الملحدين الجدد" هو ما يدور الحديث عنه في كتاب "حوار الإيمان ومنتقديه" للمؤلف دافيد فيرجسون/ أستاذ علم الدين في جامعة أدنبرة (بريطانيا). نقل الكتاب إلى العربية الدكتور منير العلي بأسلوب نقدي سهل على الرغم مما يتضمنه هذا الكتاب من آراء ولغة معقدة في تفسير الطروحات الفكرية والتأثيرات الأخلاقية للدين التي طرحها الملحدون الجدد. فالكتاب في مضمونه يناقش أدبيات الحركة الإلحادية المكتوبة بالإنجليزية، ومن أهم هؤلاء الذين يرد إسمهم في الكتاب من منتقدي الدين في الإعلام ريتشارد دوكنز ودانيال دينيت وسام هاريس. لذلك كله وضع دافيد فيرجسون مؤلفات هؤلاء في سياقها التاريخي وقارنها بالنزعات الإلحادية القديمة. فحاورهم من خلال مناقشته لمصداقية الإيمان الديني، الداروينيَة، الأخلاقيَة، التطرف والكيفية التي نفهم بها النصوص والكتب المقدسة، يقول المؤلف: ".. قوتنا هي في أن نرى أنفسنا بأعين غيرنا ممَا يؤدي إلى نقد بنَاء في الدين كما في غيره من المجالات. إن ذلك يجبنا المغالاة التي ما كنا نتوقع وجودها في إيماننا... إن ردنا على المنتقدين يجب أن لا يكون انفعالياً أو سلبياً على شكل دفاع تبريري، وإن محاولتنا ليست دفاعاً متحدياً مستميتاً عن موضع حشر فيه الدين –بل هي استطلاع متأنٍ لموقع الدين على مجمل أرض النقاش الواسعة..." وبالتالي يعتبر المؤلف أن بقاء الإيمان وإستمرارية حتى بين الفلاسفة والعلماء، إنما هو دليل على قابليته في تنظيم الحياة وفاقاً لمستوى ليس من صنعنا نحن، وكذلك في إغنائنا بحكمة العصور الماضية على أساس أنها هي حكمتنا اليوم.
يقسم الكتاب إلى سنة فصول تبدأ بنبذة تاريخية عن الإلحاد في العالم القديم والحديث، مروراً بما خسرته الذروينية التطورية عن الخلق، وعلاقة الدين بالأخلاق والفن ثم علاقة الدين بالتطرف والصراعات، وانتهاءاً بعملية فهم وتفسير النصوص المقدسة وضرورة النقد الذاتي.
