يعكس هذا الكتاب صورة عن ما يسمى بـ"ربيع دمشق" على طريق واده، من خلال المساهمات الفكرية والنظرية للكاتب خلال ثلاث سنوات على صفحات جريدة النهار اللبنانية التي كان لها الفضل الأساسي في احتضان "ربيع دمشق الموؤد" أو "المغدور". تقوم الأطروحة الأساسية لهذا الكتاب على كسر ذلك الاستعصاء التاريخي الذي يطرحه النظام العربي على المستقبل في صيغة معادلة: إنا الطغيان وإما خسارة الأوطان، فلا بد إذن من الخيال الثالث وهو الشروع بالتغيير من الداخل، قبل أن تأتينا من الخارج، ولذلك لا بد من إطلاق سراح المجتمع المدني وإحياء مؤسساته للانتقال إلى الشرعية الدستورية والاعتراف بالآخر والتعددية، للانتقال من "تغول السلطة وشخصنتها وتوثينها واحديا" إلى تدول الدولة وتداولها وأنسنتها وبشرنتها تعددياً" وذلك أن المجتمع الذي يعيش في ظل القمع والإقصاء والتهميش والصمت والانكفاء والعزوف عن المشاركة في الشأن العام، يعاقب أنظمته بالتربية ذاتها التي أنشؤوه عليها، وهي "تربية الصمت وثقافة الخوف عندما تأتي جحافل "علوج" الأجنبي كما حدث عند سقوط بغداد! إن الروح الهيغلي الذي يرفرف فوق طيات الزمن، قرر فجأة أن يحط في سنة 2000 في سورية، ليتعين هذا الروح في صيغة ثلاثية "المجتمع المدني" "الديموقراطية" "حقوق الإنسان" لقد انقدحت شرارة "روح العصر" أخيراً في حلكة ليل بهيم، طال... وطال...
