إن العربي بوقرة، هو بمثابة جسر يربط بين ثلاثة أجيال، فهناك من جهة تونسيو القرن العشرين الذين ما زالوا متأثرين إلى حد ما بعهد السيطرة العثمانية، وعانوا إلى حدّ التجريح من النير الفرنسي، وهناك، من جهة ثانية أطفال نهاية الألف الثاني الذين لم يعرفوا لهم مهداً سوى وطن راشد ومستقل، ثم هناك في المنعطف الصائب لهذه المسيرة، التونسيون الذين بلغوا سن الرشد في الوقت الذي نالت فيه بلادهم استقلالها. والعربي بوقرّة ينتمي إلى هذا الفريق الأخير، ولكن القعر والزبد ساهما، أيضاً في تكوينه. وهذا الكتاب يتحدث عن اللقاء بين شاب ناضج ووطن في بدء انطلاقته فقد كان عمر بوقرة عشرين عاماً عندما نالت تونس استقلالها. حيث مثلت جوهر وجود محمد العربي بوقرة. ومادة هويته، وهي القوى التي جعلته يتقدم على طرقات الوجود وحيث غدت أجمل معاركه.
وبمعنى آخر فإن هذا الكتاب هو حديث عن طفل كئيب في الأحياء العربية العتيقة، بمدينة بنزرت، عن تلميذ نهم في المدرسة العربية-الفرنسية، عن طالب معارض في باريس، عن أستاذ وباحث في "العلوم التطبيقية" ومناضل كوني من أصل تنمية تحترم الإنسان. يعيد برتران فرفايي في هذه الكتاب مسيرة هذا "المواطن المقروح"، مازجاً بين الأحداث، والآراء المتشابكة، والتأملات المشتركة حول ممارسة الحكم، وأخطار العلموية وعوائق العالم العربي، وتطور الإسلام.
