هذا المجلدُ هو ما بقي في البال من رحلة العمر في شقراء، وأيُّ صورةٍ أبقى في البالِ مِنْ صورة بيت المولد وما حولهُ ومن فيه والمَرْبَعُ ومُلتقى الأتراب والأحباب والخلان هو مَعْبَدُ الآباءِ والأمّهاتِ ومَوْضعُ آمالهم ومَحطُّ أحلامهم فيهِ سيذكرهم أبناؤهم وبناتُهم وتذكرُهُ أيّامهم الجميلة ويسألونَ اللهَ في صلواتهم وأدعيتهم وحركاتهم أن يكون هذا البيت بيتَ رَغَدٍ وعَيْشٍ مَليحٍ مَمْلوء بالإيمان والتقوى كما هو اليوم تملأهُ تقوى الأهلِ. وأمَرُّ هذهِ الذكريات وأبقاها في النفس هي التي تقع في زمن الطفولة، وتُعيقُها عن بلوغِ أدنى أمانيها. طفلٌ في مَيْعة الطفولة ونُضْرتها يرى في أترابه ما لا يراهُ في نفسه في الصفِّ الواحد من مدرسةِ الشيخ المعلّم هم يقرأون على اللوح الأسود مِنْ ما لا يستطيع قراءتهُ ولا يراه. والشيخ هذا يُلَوِّح بقضيب الرمان ويقول انتبهوا، يَفرك التلميذ عينيه ثمّ ينظر الى اللوح فيرى الأمرَ كما كان وإذا طُلِب إليه أن يقرأ ما على اللوح من كلمات تقاعس وتأوَّه وسكت
