يأتي هذا الكتاب بمثابة إفصاح عن مشاعر حزن ألمت بالكاتب جراء فقدانه صديقه ورفيق دربه علي حسن سلامة (أبو حسن). لجأ العقيد محمود الناطور (أبو الطيب) وكمخرج من الألم الذي أصابه لفقدانه أخوه في السلاح إلى الكتابة، إذ هو يصرح أنه لم يكن في يوم من الأيام كاتباً أو صحفياً أو أديباً، فمنذ تفتحت عيناه على الحياة لمس عمق مأساة شعبه ومعاناته اليومية، فاجترار قصة الوطن المغتصب كل يوم كانت تخلق في نفسه كما نفس أبناء جيله الكثير من الأحلام والخطط والآمال لذا فإن ما سيتناوله في كتابه هذا ليس ذكريات أو مذكرات، بل هو جزء من مخزون الذاكرة الفردية الملتصقة أبداً بالوطن والثورة وهو جزء يسير جداً من تاريخ مرحلة نضال ومعاناة المقاتلين الفلسطينيين، وسيتناول من التاريخ، في هذا الكتاب، الوجود الفلسطيني في لبنان منذ العام 1968 وحتى زمن تأليف هذا الكتاب، ومن خلال ذلك سيتعرض إلى بعض تفاصيل الغزو الإسرائيلي للبنان ولمعركة بيروت بالتحديد مقتصراً في ذلك على دور قاطع واحد هو القاطع الثالث الذي سيأتي على تفصيله والذي تواجد فيه قوات الـ(17) والذي كان للكاتب دور قيادته والإشراف عليه، حيث يعرض أولاً وبشكل خاص مواقع قوات الـ(17) كجزء متواضع من قوات العاصفة وقوات الثورة الفلسطينية من حيث قوتها أو أعدادها وتطورها ومهامها القتالية في المعركة، مسترشداً في ذلك في من قيادته لهذه القوات، وخدمته في صفوفها ومن الإرشادات والوجيهات اليومية التي كانت تلك القوات تتلقاها من أبو عمار في الاستعداد والتدريب والتسلح للوصول إلى جاهزية قتالية عالية.
