في روائية (ثلاثية الصمت) يرصد "خليل خميس" التحول البطيء، الممانع، لقبائل بدوية من حياة البداوة إلى حياة الحضارة، في فضاء مكاني معين "صحراء الجزيرة العربية" وفي مرحلة تاريخية محددة تقترب من أول خلافة في الإسلام. في هذا الفضاء الروائي يغطي الروائي تاريخاً طويلاً يتحرك على جغرافيا واسعة، متخذاً من روح الحكاية مادة خصبة يضيء من خلالها ثقافة البدو وأنماط عيشهم وصراعاتهم وأدواتهم وحيواناتهم، ما يمنح الرواية نفساً ملحمياً، ويجعلها مرجعاً انثروبولوجياً حافلاً بأسماء زعماء القبائل، والمحاربون، والفرسان، الذين لوَنوا صفحات الرواية بعبق الماضي وحكايا الناس. في مفتتح الرواية يصف الراوي حياة الصحراء: "الناس في القبيلة يتمتعون بحس الدعابة من أي شيء ومن لا شيء، يحولون حوارات الزعماء والأعيان مصدراً للسخرية ومواقف ابناء القبيلة نفسها إلى مادة مملوءة بالدعابة، فكل شيء لديهم مباح لكنهم فرسان لا يشق لهم غبار في ساعة الجد والحزم، أما النساء فهن من أشهر نساء العرب جمالاً ووفاء، وكن مضرباً للشعراء بل وتنافساً بين فرسان القبائل الأخرى(...)". قسم الروائي ثلاثيته إلى ثلاثة عناوين: 1- دموع في الصمت الأخير، 2- صمت الذاكرة، 3- بقعة من الصمت.
