يشكل هذا الكتاب قراءة في فكر المؤرخ اللبناني المعروف "كمال الصليبي" يأتي ذلك من خلال حوارات جادة أجراها الأستاذ "صقر أبو فخر" مع الحكيم اللبناني وضعها تحت عنوان "الهرطوقي الحكيم". وفي الكتاب نقاشات صاخبة مع الصليبي (1929-2011) حول المسيح (عليه السلام)، ومحمد (ص) وتاريخ الموارنة، والنهضة العربية، والإنسداد التاريخي عند العرب، وفخر الدين المعني، والمتنبي، ورأس بيروت، وطانيوس شاهين، وهجرة المسيحيين، وعن الغرب، والإسلام، والأصولية الإسلامية، وموضوعات أخرى. وفي "الهرطوقي الحكيم" يكشف كمال الصليبي بالتفصيل عن مشروع تأسيس دولة لبنان على أيدي تجار كاثوليك من دمشق: "لبنان هو كيان ظهر سنة 1920. قبل 1920 لم يكن هناك ما يسمى لبنان أو مصطلح لبناني، كما لم يكن هناك ما يسمى فلسطين أو فلسطيني، ولم يكن هناك ما يسمى سورية أو سوري، إلا من ناحية إثنية وجغرافية. الفريق الذي أراد إنشاء لبنان بدأ يخطط لذلك منذ سنة 1880 تقريباً. ودراسة هذه الخطة لم تكتمل بعد. ثمة كتابات في هذا الشأن، لكنها غير منشورة. بدأت فكرة لبنان في رأس مجموعة من المسيحيين الكاثوليك، بمن فيهم الموارنة، في لبنان وسورية. ومن غرائب الأمور أن آباء لبنان ولدوا في الشام وعاشوا في الشام. لكن هناك ما يجمعهم، أي مسيحيتهم، وأنهم من الأثرياء الذين يطلق عليهم مصطلح "برجوازية" أقام هؤلاء مشاريع تجارية، وخططوا لإقامة بلد إسمه لبنان بالحدود المعروفة، وهي حدود أخذوها من خارطة رسمها الفرنسيون سنة 1861. كانت الخارطة خارطة الطوائف، لكن هؤلاء الشوام قالوا آنذاك إن حدود ما أصبح لبنان الصغير في ما بعد يمكن أن تتعايش فيه الطوائف الموجودة في إطاره". هكذا هو "كمال الصليبي" "مالىء الدنيا وشاغل الناس" جريء بإطلاق أفكاره وما يؤمن به. وفي هذا الكتاب سوف نعرف بأنه "ليس مؤرخا يتنزه، بل مفكر يغير" كما وصفه صقر أبو فخر.
