عُرف عن الرجال العرب قبل الإسلام وبعده أنهم استمتعوا بحرية جنسية واسعة، سواء داخل الزواج عن طريق تعدُّد الزوجات وحرية الطلاق، أو خارج الزواج عن طريق إباحة العلاقات الجنسية مع الجواري والإماء أو ما ملكَت اليمين.
ولم تكن هذه هي صفة العرب وحدهم دون سائر الرجال في المُجتمعات الأخرى؛ فقد أعطى الرجال أنفسهم هذه الحرية الجنسية منذ بدء النظام الأبوي ونشوء الأسرة الأبوية؛ فهي حرية ترتبط بالنظام الأبوي أكثر مما تَرتبط بجغرافيا البلد أو بموقعه من الشرق أو من الغرب أو بجنسية القوم وما إذا كانوا من العرب أو العجم.
