تشكل هذه المجموعة من الكتابات جزءاً من نهج مؤسسة عبد الحميد شومان في إقامة صلة بين الفكر والواقع، وقد عرف الناس جهود المؤسسة المتواصلة، وانحيازها إلى التنوير، على الرغم من سائر أشكال الظلم والعتمة التي تلف زمن الأمة منذ أن بدأ عصر النهضة. إن هذا الكتابات تتكئ، في نصوصها، على حوارات بين كتابها وبين شخصيات فكرية تجمع ينها رابطة الوطنية والانفتاح والبحث والتنوير، وقد كشفت النصوص، التي اتخذت أشكال الدراسة والمحاضرة والنص المكتوب لندوة بعينها، عن ثلاثة محاور عامة، هي: محور الحداثة، ومحور خاص بمحمود درويش، ومحور تشكله كتابات استرجاعية لسير مجموعة من الشخصيات شاركت في النضال الفكري والوطني والاجتماعي على امتداد القرن العشرين. هذه صورة عامة لهذا الكتاب، الذي تقدمه مؤسسة عبد الحميد شومان، وما أظن أن في هذه المقدمة ما يغني عن قراءة هذه النصوص، خاصة والأمة ترزح تحت بلاء روما الجديدة، وبلاء الاستبداد، وتلقي وراء ظهرها ثقافتها ولغتها كي تلحق خفيفة بهذا الانفلات الذي يسلبها حضورها وكبرياءها وثروتها، حتى إن الحليم، الذي يحبها، يقف حائراً في حالها حين لا تصغي وهو ينادي عليها كي تنهض من كبوتها.
