والكتاب كما يشير مؤلفه أنه يحيل عنوانه على تسمية "القارئ القياسي" التي يقترحها أحد أبحاثه لوصف موقف التلقي الذي يمثله التراث النقدي البلاغي حيث يتغلل في البلاغة طموح إلى أن تغدو الكيفيات الأسلوبية واختيارات التركيب والدلالة في النص محددة دلالياً وجمالياً في ذهن القارئ بشكل مسبق ونهائي في ما يشبه "المعجم الذي يصف ويعاير ويفسر بمعزل عن التجربة أو الفعل الفردي والاكتشافي للقراءة". وقد انطوى الكتاب على أربعة مباحث درس في أوله النظر الى الفكرة البلاغية العربية ومفاهيمها بما يكشف عن موقفها بوصفها متلقياً ذا خطاطة ذهنية محددة تجاه اللغة والمعنى والإبداع ويعمد البحث أيضا إلى إبراز مبادئ البلاغة الأساسية التي رسمت بها البلاغة قوانين تفسير الخطاب وقوانين انتاجه، في حين جاء البحث الثاني موضحاً طريقة التوليد للمصطلح الأدبي عند القدامى من خلال أبرز المصطلحات التي تصف الشعر في عروضيته وتفاضله وعلاقته بالقديم ويتخذ زياد في بحثه الثالث من القراءة النقدية في التراث النقدي مادة للكشف عن سلطة النموذج الذي يستحيل مركزاً ويشكل بالتالي سلطة تتحكم في القيمة والمعنى واللغة والتجربة. أما المبحث الأخير فقد تناول فيه الأنواع الأدبية من زاوية تفاضلها وتراتبها النقدي ومن ثم عدم تساويها حضوراً وأهمية في الحقب والنظريات والمذاهب النقدية الأدبية. وجماع هذه الأبحاث هي في حقيقتها اسئلة جوهرية حول موضوعه القراءة والعلاقة بالتراث والزمن وأفق انتاج المعنى.
