في هذا الكتاب يروي لنا مؤلفه عطا عبد الوهاب تفاصيل دقيقة عن القيام بأداء الخدمة العامة قد لا يعرفها عموم الناس فهو مثلاً يحدثنا عن كيفية تعامله مع الجالية العراقية في الأردن التي كانت تبلغ أيامئذ نحو ربع مليون عراقي. يقول الكاتب أن الاتصال الشخصي بكل فرد من هؤلاء هو ضرب من المستحيل. لذلك فإنه اختار أن يكون الاتصال بالنخب العراقية البارزة مثل الفنانين والأساتذة ورجا الأعمال بشكل مؤسسي وذلك بجمعهم في منزل السفير في ندوة مفتوحة لكل فئة من الفئات. ويحدثنا الكاتب كذلك كيف أنه دأب على خدمة العلاقات العراقية- الأردنية حتى كانت في أحسن حالاتها عند مغادرته موقعه كسفير للعراق في عمان، مع أن خدمته لم تتجاوز السنتين. ويروي لنا كيف أنه فوجئ بمنحه من لدن جلالة الملك عبد الله الثاني وسام الاستقلال من الدرجة الأولى تقديراً لخدمته القصيرة، وهو أمر استثنائي يروي لنا الكاتب دقائقه في الكتاب. وفي طيات الكتاب بضع قصائد نظمها الكاتب إبان خدمته للتعبير عما يختلج في فكره ونفسه من أفكار ومشاعر، ما يعطي الكاتب نكهة خاصة. وللكاتب بالمناسبة ديوان شعر بعنوان "اعوام الرمادة" صدر في عام 2002.
