"أول ما سيفعله الرجال حالماً لنزيل القناصة من فوق السطوح وتنسحب المدافع من بين الأزقة والطائرات من المساء -دفن الشهداء. أول ما ستفعله النساء حالما ينصرف الجنود من الشرفات والبيوت -زيارة المقابر والبكاء أول ما سيفعله الصغار في ليلة لا قصف فيها- يوقدون النار على جنبات الشوارع. وينسجون الحكايات عمن سكنوا القبور. أول ما سيفعله الجنود حين يعودون إلى نسائهم- التبجح بشجاعتهم أمام شراسة الأعداء وعدتهم، وبما يحملون من وعود وشوق لأجسادهم. أول ما سيفعله الطيارون حين يعودون في هدنة قصيرة -الذهاب لناد للمبارزة. أول ما سيفعله المدفعيون حينما يرجعون قليلاً -تأمل معنى البطولة ربما يمتطون الخيول أو يترجلون. أول ما سيفعله الشعراء رد الاعتبار للشعر والحديث عن الحب، ربما يعيدون تشكيل سرفانتيس. أول ما سيفعله الشهداء الاعتذار عن الرحيل، وعما حل من وجع بعدهم. أول ما ستفعله العشيقات البوح بأسماء من مات من عشاقهن. أنا أنا فلست أعرف ماذا سأفعل!".
