"إن الخندق موجود منذ زمن طويل جداً، والنار فيه لا تخمد... دائمة الاشتعال... لم يحاول أحد إطفاءها، وكان يجلس بجوارها شيخ كبير السن له لحية بيضاء طويلة، ويحمل في يده ناياً من الخيزران ينفخ فيه أنغاماً رغم إيقاعاتها الحزينة إلا أنها تثير المشاعر، وجلوسه يستمر منذ الصباح حتى ساعة الغروب، بعدها يرحل ماشياً على قدميه ليعود في الصباح التالي. وكان يقفان هي وهو منذ الطفولة يده في يدها.. يتأملان الخندق والنار المشتعلة فيه، ويرقبان العجوز الجالس بجوارها، ويستمعان إلى أنغام الناي دون أن يتكلما.. فقط يكتفيان بالنظر إلى بعضهما البعض.. وتمضي الأيام والحال كما هو دون تغيير، إلى أن يأتي اليوم الذي كان ينتظره منذ زمن بعيد... إن الطفلين يقتربان منه وهو مستمر في نفخ نايه.. كاتماً فرحته باقترابهما منه... سألاه عن قصة النار. لم يمانع من سرد الحكاية، فهو منذ زمن طويل ينتظر أن يحكيها...". في هذه المجموعة القصصية تطرح "أنيسة الزياني" توليفة من الأقاصيص القصيرة التي تسرد فيها بعضاً من معاناة أبناء جيلها، وبعضاً من ذكراياتها القديمة التي حولتها عبر يراعها إلى كلمات نسجت منها مجموعتها هذه المحملة برياح الحب، والحنان، والمودة والحزن، والغضب.
