الواقع العربي هو الآن في مواجهة تحديات الواقع وخيارات المستقل، وذلك بين منهجين في النظر: فأما أن يكون الزمن بالنسبة للعرب آنات مبسوطات، في صعيد مصمت محايد، متقاربات أو متباعدات، بكل منها بداية ووسط ونهاية من الممكن تحديدها على نحو ما تحدد به أجزاء المسطرة، كما يمكن القبض على حقائقها الجزئية، والاطمئنان إلى تمام العلم بها، وأما أن يُرى الزمن في تشابك آناته وتداخلها، وفي تولد بعضها من بعض، واستدعاء بعضها بعضاً، في تيار مندفع، يتماهى فيه الماضي والحاضر ويتراءى المستقبل كما لو أن ذلك كله تجليات لحقيقة واحدة، تدرك مجتمعة أو تفوت كلها، ولا شيء وراء ذلك.
ولقد أتخذ الكتاب سبيله الممكنة بين هذين النهجين على اختلاف تخصصات المشاركين، وتباين اهتماماتهم وذلك من خلال المحاضرات التي جاءت في سياق نشاطات منتدى عبد الحميد شومان الثقافي خلال العام 1999 وجزء من العام 2000 فانتظمت مواضيع تلك المحاضرات ضمن أربعة محاور: فكان أولها "في وعي الذات ومحدداتها" وكان الثاني في فقه الواقع وآفاقه" الثالث في وعي التجربة ومعطياتها وكان الرابع في وعي المستقبل وتحدياته، وهي محاور أقرب إلى أن تكون مرايا متقابلة يستنطق بعضها بعضاً، ويتخايل في واحدها ما يعمرها جميعاً من حقائق الوجود العربي الذي تمتد ظلاله وارفة في المكان وتذهب جذوره مغرقة في الزمان.
يضم هذا الكتاب مجموعة من المحاضرات حول أبرز قضايا الوطن العربي الراهنة وخيارات المستقبل، أقلتها نخبة من الأساتذة المفكرين والباحثين العرب في منتدى عبد الحميد شومان الثقافي، خلال العام 1999 وجزء من العام 2000، وذلك في سياق برنامج المحاضرات الأسبوعية التي يقيمها المنتدى.
ومن المؤمّل أن يشكل هذا الكتاب إسهاماً حقيقياً في الجهد العربي الفكري القائم من أجل البحث عن أفضل الخيارات المتاحة والممكنة للتعامل الأمثل مع تحديات المستقبل الكبيرة، التي أصبحت، واجهتها تحتاج إلى قدر عالٍ من الوعي والتصميم.
