يضم هذا الكتاب أعمال ندوة موسعة عقدت في عمان في شهر نيسان عام 1999، وساهم بتنظيمها كل من منتدى الفكر العربي وجمعية رجال الأعمال الأردنيين، ومؤسسة عبد الحميد شومان، بمشاركة نخبة من ذوي الاختصاص في مجال الاقتصاد من الأردن وبعض الدول العربية. وناقشت الدورة عدداً من المحاور المتصلة بالاقتصاد العربي وعلاقته بالتطورات العالمية، من خلال تتبع واقع الإصلاحات الاقتصادية العربية، والأدوار الجديدة للقطاعين العام والخاص، إضافة إلى التركيز على الإمكانات الرحبة التي من شأنها تعزيز التعاون الاقتصادي العربي في ظل الأوضاع الراهنة والمستقبلية. وجاء ترتيب الأبحاث متدرجاً ضمن نسق تكاملي يبدأ بتناول الشأن الاقتصادي العامّ، من حيث علاقة الاقتصاد العربي بنظيره العالمي، مروراً ببحث عدد من تجارب الإصلاحات الاقتصادية في كل من المغرب وتونس ومصر والأردن، وانتهاءً بآفاق التعاون الاقتصادي العربي وسبل دفعه وتنشيطه. ومن المؤمل أن يسهم هذا الإصدار، الذي اشتركت في إنجازه ثلاث مؤسسات تعنى بالشأن العربي، في تعزيز الاهتمام بدور الاقتصاد في صناعة المستقبل وتحديد مصائر الدول، فضلاً عن تداعياته ذات الأثر البالغ في رسم المشهد العالمي في القرن الجديد.
