إن العلاقة بين الدولة والمذهب، في التاريخ العربي الإسلامي، سلباً أم إيجاباً، علاقة سجالية في المقام الأول، وتسير لصالح الدولة في المقام الثاني. يقدم الدكتور غسان إسماعيل عبد الخالق في هذا الكتاب دراسة حول هذا الموضوع من خلال مباحث فكرية أربع. رابعها وأولها أبرزا ذلك التطابق في الأدوار على رغم التناقض في الرموز على نحو تراجيدي، فالمأمون العباسي في بغداد شرع في حملة تطهير فكري ظاهرها عقائدي، وباطنها سياسي بحت، فيذهب ضحيتها غير قليل من أئمة السنة الذين رفضوا التسليم بمعظم مقولات المعتزلة. والناصر الأموي في قرطبة، يشرع بعد أكثر من مئة عام، في حملة تطهير فكري، ظاهرها عقائدي وباطنها سياسي أيضاً، فيذهب ضحيتها غير قليل من رجالات المعتزلة "المسريين" الذين لم تستهوهم مقولات المذهب المالكي. هذه العلاقة السجالية التي كانت تسير لصالح الدولة حاول ابن خلدون، كما يتضح في المبحث الثاني الخروج منها على نحو براغماتي. ومحاولته تلك لم يقيض لها تجسداً نظرياً أو عملياً طوال قرون تلت، ظلت في منأى عن وعي سلفيي رواد النهضة العربية. فقد شغلت واقعة الاستعمار هؤلاء الرواد بترداد سؤال واحد لماذا تنحط الأمم وكيف تنهض؟ دون غيره من الأسئلة الخلدونية الكثيرة والذي اندفع بعض الرواد مثل جمال الدين الأفغاني إلى الإجابة عنه في المبحث الثاني على نحو يظهر إصراراً على استمرار العلاقة السجالية بين الدولة والمذهب، بل بين دولة الإسلام ودولة الأجنبي.
