كتبت هذه السطور في صيف 1972، وكنت آنذاك نزيل إحدى ضواحي مدينة مانشستر بإنكلترا. وما أدراك ما الصيف في تلك الديار! فهو ناقص مبتور، وإشراقة الشمس تشوبها على الأغلب إغماضة هنا وحلكة هناك. فكأني لذت بنسائم هذه النظرات من هذا النقص وسواه. ولم أودع أية خاطرة قرطاسي إلى متى اكتملت في ذهني. وعند شبوبها عن الطوق كنت أسطرها على مهل، كأني أخشى عليها من أعاصير الدنيا وأنوائها. وكنت أرعاها وأشذ بها على ضوء مصباح صغير برفقة أنغامي الأثيرة. وكم أضفت هذه اللمسات الساذجة من الدفء والدعة على عالمي المتجمد ذاك! ومع أن نظراتي هذه حصيلة ليال معدودة، إلا أنها عميقة الجذور حقاً. فهي صدى تجارب متشعبة الأفنان متأصلة الأرومة. وقد أطلت النظر في بعضها ما أطلت حتى أصابني زوغان بصر كذلك الذي يقرن عادة بالتبر وأصحاب التبر. ولا بأس، فمن هذا الزوغان اكتسبت وضوح البصيرة، ولو إلى حين. وإذا كان هذا نصيبي لقربي الشديد من العين الذهنية التي أرقني سرها، فإني أتمنى لك عزيزي القارئ، وأنت المراقب البعيد والناقد الموضوعي، حظاً أفضل مع الصفاء والنقاء دون الزوغان وغشاوة البصر. فإذا ألفيت بعض تعقيد أو إبهام بين الآونة والأخرى، فاذكر بأن هذه النظرات ما هي إلا ترجمة روح... لا أكثر ولا أقل...
