منذ بدء الزمان أولى الإنسان أهمية بالغة للتطورات الحاصلة في أعماق الذهن الإنساني، أي في العالم الداخلي أو ما دون الوعي. وكنتيجة لذلك، تواصل الاهتمام بدلالة الأحلام وتفسيرها وتعاظم شأنه.
وقد قال المعلم السوري حميد بن قادة (توفّاه الله عام 1946): "كل إنسان عاقل على يقين فعلي بوجود أواصر عميقة بين نشاطات الإنسان عندما يكون في حالة وعي، وبين كل ما يراه في عالمه الداخلي فيما دون الوعي. ويمكننا أن نجزم أيضاً بأن بعض القوة المجردة التي لا يبدو أننا نملك أي سيطرة عليها هي نفسها التي تتفاعل لتكوّن الأحلام".
"وتستهل هذه القوى نشاطها ما أن تمهد قوة الوعي لدينا (عند النوم) إلى حد ما، ولكنها لا تتعطل كلياً أو تتحول إلى حالة سبات عميق حيث يدخل العقل إلى عالم خالٍ تماماً ولفترة مؤقتة...".
من أجل ذلك لم يدخر المؤلف وسعاً لإبراز تفسير لتلك الأحلام التي اعتبرها هو "والمعلمون" قابلة للتفسير.
