حالة من الشجن هو تجسيد حي لخواطر الكاتب المصري الشاب فتحي المزين حيث تشتبك الأحاسيس الصادقة بالحب و التعلق بالماضي و الذكريات بالخيانة و الطيبوبة و الرغبة في التفوق بمرارة الواقع، عن الإخلاص و الوفاء للزوجة، عن الغربة و عن الوطن، عن الحب و الزواج، عن المرأة التي لا تنسى، عن مفهوم الثراء الحقيقي و عن رجال بلغوا درجة شموخ النخل. بين صفحات الكتاب تحدث فتحي المزين عن حالة الشجن التي كان يحس بها إنطلاقا من نظرته لواقعه و الواقع الذي صارت عليها البشرية اليوم من إندثار لقيم الحب و التسامح و حب الخير للغير و انتقذ بشكل كبير كل من يجرون وراء رغباتهم الجامحة غير مبالين بهذه القيم و تغييرهم لمفهوم الحب بحيث تجد الشباب اليوم متلهفا لحب مفقود و تراه يبحث عنه في كل مكان في الجامعة، على الشاطئ و في الطريق معتقدا أن الحب هو إرضاء للرغبة الجنسية لا غير و هنا يظهر تغيير المفاهيم، تحدث الكاتب عن القناعة التي لم يعد لها وجود و انشغال كل فرد بما يملك الآخر من جانب مادي بعيدا عن من يمتلك الأخلاق و الصفات الحميدة و ثمن ذلك بالفرق بين من يملك ذوقا و من لا يملكه.
