اسمه ونسبه: محمد بن محمد بن محمد بن أحمد أبو حامد الغزالي الطوسي، ويلقب بزين الدين، وبحجة الإسلام.
والغزَّالي «نسبته إلى صناعة الغزل», والغزَالي «نسبته إلى غزالة من قرى طوس», قاله الزركلي في الأعلام وقال الصفدي: «قيل: إنه قال في بعض مصنفاته: ونسبني قوم إلى الغزَّال، وإنما أنا الغَزَالي نسبة إلى قرية يقال لها غزالة بتخفيف الزاي.
والله أعلم» .
مولده ووفاته: مولده ووفاته في الطابران (قصبة طوس، بخراسان).
قال ابن السبكي: « وكانت وفاته قدس الله روحه بطوس يوم الاثنين رابع عشر جمادى الآخرة سنة خمس وخمسمائة ودفن بظاهر قصبة طابران» .
مشيخته: من جملة شيوخ الغزالي إمام الحرمين أبو المعالي الجويني, وأحمد بن محمد الراذكاني, والإمام أبو نصر الإسماعيلي, وأبو سهل محمد ابن عبد الله الحفصي, والقاضي أبو الفتح الحاكمي الطوسي, وأبو عبد الله محمد بن أحمد الخواري, وغيرهم.
تلامذته: من تلاميذه الذين أخذوا عنه أبو طاهر الجرجاني, وابن تومرت الملقب بالمهدي, وأبو بكر ابن العربي, وغيرهم.
