اسمه ونسبه: محمد بن محمد بن محمد بن أحمد أبو حامد الغزالي الطوسي، ويلقب بزين الدين، وبحجة الإسلام.
والغزَّالي «نسبته إلى صناعة الغزل», والغزَالي «نسبته إلى غزالة من قرى طوس», قاله الزركلي في الأعلام وقال الصفدي: «قيل: إنه قال في بعض مصنفاته: ونسبني قوم إلى الغزَّال، وإنما أنا الغَزَالي نسبة إلى قرية يقال لها غزالة بتخفيف الزاي.
والله أعلم» .
مولده ووفاته: مولده ووفاته في الطابران (قصبة طوس، بخراسان).
قال ابن السبكي: « وكانت وفاته قدس الله روحه بطوس يوم الاثنين رابع عشر جمادى الآخرة سنة خمس وخمسمائة ودفن بظاهر قصبة طابران» .
مشيخته: من جملة شيوخ الغزالي إمام الحرمين أبو المعالي الجويني, وأحمد بن محمد الراذكاني, والإمام أبو نصر الإسماعيلي, وأبو سهل محمد ابن عبد الله الحفصي, والقاضي أبو الفتح الحاكمي الطوسي, وأبو عبد الله محمد بن أحمد الخواري, وغيرهم.
تلامذته: من تلاميذه الذين أخذوا عنه أبو طاهر الجرجاني, وابن تومرت الملقب بالمهدي, وأبو بكر ابن العربي, وغيرهم.

أشار علىَّ واحد العصر وإمام المِصر شيخي وقدوتي سيدي الشيخ جودة ابن سيدي محمد أبي اليزيد المهدي قدس الله سرهما بجمع هذا المجموع المبارك ونشره، وسمى لي ما أضمه فيه من الأوراد مستنداً على ما جاء في مجموع الأحزاب الذي جمعه إمام زمانه سيدي أحمد ضياء الدين الكشخانوي شيخ شيخنا الأكبر سيدي جودة إبراهيم المعروف بين العارفين بوزير النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم). وقد ضم هذا المجموع الأنور الفريد العديد مما نسبه مولانا الكمشخانوي لحجة الإسلام الإمام الغزالي > فأثبتناه هنا بعد المراجعة والتصويب، وزدت عليه القليل مما وجدته في هذا المصدر أو ذاك. ولا يخفى أن واسطة هذا العقد من هذه الأوراد الشريفة حزب "السر المصون" الغريب الترتيب العجيب التركيب الذي له من البركات ما يدق عن فهم الأريب، فهو من أعظم التحصنات التي وردت عن السادة الصوفية.
