"كلما أعتدنا القهر تمسكنا بالبقاء ورفضنا الاستسلام لعذبات النفس. بين ضرب السياط وفري الخوازيق ينسدل الستار، وبين لطمة الكف وطعنة السيف تخرس الظلال. وبعدها قد نألف القهر ونهواه، فتجد بينا من يستنشقه كالهواء ويستعذبه كرشفة ماء، وتاصدف كذلك م يترجع سمومه في كل مناسبة ثم يمسح شفتيه بكفه ويثبت بصره إلى الحائط المائل أمامه وينتظر".
تدور أحداث هذه الرواية في عام 1865 وتحكي عن الوقائع المنسية لثورة الشيخ أحمد الطيب التي اشتعلت في قرى البر الشرقي جنوبي مديرية أسيوط، حيث أعلن الشيخ لأهالي "قاو الكبرى" أن الله بعثه إليهم لكي يخلصهم من الظلم والإجحاف، ولكي يقيم العدل ويعيد الحق لأهله. على لسان شخصيات مأخوذة من عروض خيال الظل لابن دانيال تسرد الرواية وقائع ما جى لأهالي قرى "قاو الكبىر" و"الشيخ جابر" و"النطرة" و"ريانيّة أبو أحمد" و"النواورة"، الذين تمردوا ضد سلطة وحكم الخديوي إسماعيل. كما أنها تحكي عن الغارة التي قادها فاضل باشا مفتش عام الصعيد لقمع الثورة، والتي انتهت بتدمير تلك القرى، ونفي أهاليها إلى دمياط، ومحو أسمائها من الوجود، حيث قام الخديوي بمكافأة من ساند فاضل باشا من أعيان وعُمد الناحية، فكفل "الريانية" لعبد العال لعقالي الذي أسماها "العقال قبلي"، بينما كُفلت "قاو الكبرى" لعثمان الأحدب وتغير اسمها إلى "العتمانية"، وكُفلت قريتي "النطرة" و"الشيخ جابر" لهمام بك فأطلق عيهما "الهمامية".
