ينسج "طارق إمام" في هذه الرواية عالماً عجائبياً، البطل والمحرك فيه وليٌ غامض يحيا داخل ضريحه، على خلفية مدينةٍ مصرية متخيلة، غريبة وموحشة. بعد موته بمئات السنين، ينجب الولي طفلاً من إحدى فقيرات المدينة.. يكبر الطفل ليجد نفسه ممزقاً بين قداسة أبيه وسطوته الروحية على الناس، وبين دنس أمه التي قُتلت في ظروف غامضة فور ولادته، يجد نفسه متهماً من أعداء أبيه بأنه ابن زنا، لا حق له حتى في الحصول على اسم، مثلما يجد نفسه متوجاً من قبل رجال "الطريقة" ومريدي أبيه كابن ووريث للرجل المقدس، إلى أن يأتي اليوم الذي يقرر له فيه أبوه أن يموت.. ليقطع طريقاً طويلاً يبدأ بالمقابر العمومية حيث ترقد أمه دون ذكرى، وينتهي بالضريح المهيب.. وبين القوسين، يُدوِّر الابن الممزق ـ في ساعات قليلة هي الزمن الفعلي للحدث الروائي ـ جميع أسئلة حياته الوجودية والثقافية في واقعٍ ملتبس.
