صبيحة يوم الحادي عشر من سبتمبر لعام 2001، اصطدمتْ طائرتان جوِّيَّتان مدنيَّتان مخطوفتان ببُرْجَي مَبنى مركز التجارة العالَمي؛ لينهارَ المبنى في مشهد هوليودي دراماتيكي من الطراز الأول الثقيل، في غضون ساعات معدودة، ولتستيقظ "أمريكا" التي كانتْ غَارقة في "الصناعات الترفيهيَّة"، وحالة من "اللامبالاة" على وقْعِ هجمات - وُصفتْ بـ"الحدث الجَلَل" - لتتوالى الأحداث بسرعة غير طبيعيَّة، أُعلن عن طائرة ثالثة هاجمتْ مَقرَّ وزارة الدفاع الأمريكية (البنتاجون)، ثلاثة آلاف من الضحايا والمصابين من جرَّاء الإنفجارات؛ ليعلن الرئيس الأمريكي "جورج دبليو بوش" عن الحرب ضد الإرهاب و"القاعدة"، تَحت مُسَمَّى "الحرب الصليبية الجديدة" - حسب تعبير بوش بعد ذلك - مع مباركة أغلب أنظمة الدول العربية الإسلامية لهذه الحرب بعد أن طالتْها أصابعُ الاتهام المباشر، ليبدأ عصر "الهيمنة الأمريكية" الجديد. يحاول الكاتب محمد محمود ولد محمدو - في كتابه الثري بالتفاصيل "الهجمة المضادة للحملة الصليبية: جذور وتداعيات الحادي عشر من سبتمبر" - تفسير: "لماذا تَمَّ ارتكاب هجمات الحادي عشر من سبتمبر؟ لماذا وقَع حادث من هذا القبيل؟ ما الذي بلغ بشباب مُتعلِّمين من أوساط برجوازية عربية، ويعيشون حياة عَصْريَّة، ما الذي جعلَهم يأخذون في التحضير الدقيق لهجمات انتحارية من هذا النوع؟"؛ (ص: 5). ويدلِّل الكاتب أنَّ كتابه "مصدر للمعلومات المتعلِّقة بأحداث الحادي عشر من سبتمبر 2001، ووسيلة للتفكير في أسبابها وآثارها، وفَهم مدلولاتها، والتفكير في تبعاتها"؛ (ص: 8). وساعد على التدليل على أهميَّة الكتاب كمُّ المعلومات التي يزْخَر بها الكتاب في أسلوب سَردي طيِّب من الكاتب، إلى جانب أنَّ الكاتب نفسَه ضليعٌ في العمل السياسي، فصاحِب الكتاب باحثٌ، وحاصِل على الدكتوراه في العلوم السياسية، وسَبَق له أنْ تقلَّد مناصب أكاديميَّة مرموقة، فقد شَغل منصب المدير المساعد لبرنامج السياسات الإنسانية والبحث في النزاعات بجامعة "هارفرد"، وكذلك مدير البحث بالمجلس الدولي لسياسات حقوق الإنسان "بجنيف"، وعمل باحثًا بمعهد "رالف بنتش" للأمم المتحدة بمدينة "نيويورك"، إلى جانب كونه وزيرَ خارجية دولة "موريتانيا" الأَسْبق.
