جمع الإمام البغوي في المصابيح أحاديث من كتب السنة في كل ما يحتاجه المسلم في حياته من فقه وعقيدة تيسيرا على غير العلماء، وإغناء لهم عن الرجوع إلى الكتب الواسعة الكثيرة، ولما كان هذا قصده حذف أسانيدها، ولم يشر إلى اسم الصحابي الراوي إلا لحاجة . وقد اهتم العلماء بشرحه فشرح غير مرة وقد اعتمد اصطلاحا خاصا حيث جعل أحاديث الصحيحين تحت قوله : (من الصحاح) وأحاديث غيرهما تحت قوله: (من الحسان)وذكر المؤلف أنه قد يذكر الضعيف والغريب ولكنه يشير إليه، وأنه لم يذكر فيه المناكير .والموضوعات وقد خرجت أحاديث الكتاب في الهامش . وزود الكتاب بفهرس للأحاديث
