ترتكز هذه الدراسة على طريقة أطلق عليها المؤلف اسم "التخصص الأوّلي"، وعمادُها أن يتناول الدارس فرعاً واسعاً من فروع الأدب، كالشعر مثلاً، فيختار نخبة من أمرائه، ويدرس كلاًّ منهم درساً وافياً يجمع بين البحث العلمي والتحليل الأدبي وصولاً إلى غاية التقصّي والتحليل. وتطبيقاً لهذه الطريقة، اختار المؤلف، لدراسة الشعر في العصر العباسي، ثمانية من أبرز أعلامه هم: أبو نواس، وأبو العتاهية، وأبو تمَّام، والبحتري، وابن الرومي، والمتنبي، والمعرّين وابن الفارض. وقوام خطته في هذه الدراسة العناية بمصادر هؤلاء الأعلام، وتحليل طائفة كبيرة من أعمالهم الشعرية. إن لهذا الكتاب غرضين أساسيّين أولهما علميّ، وهو الجريُ في ميدان البحث الحرّ، وثانيهما أدبيّ، وهو التفقّه بالأدب نفسه.
