يقول جاك مايلز: لقد تناقلت اليهودية والمسيحية معرفتها بالله من جيل الى جيل وبطرائق شتى. فبالنسبة للبعض كانت هناك ولاتزال الاتجاهات المتطلبة القاسية، بل وسرية أحياناً، الخاصة بالزهد والتصوف واللاهوت. وبالنسبة للأكثرية فإن هناك كتاباً يمكن للمؤمن ولغير المؤمن أن يفتحه ويقرأ فيه. أما معرفة الله كشخصية ادبية فلا تقتضي الإيمان بالله ولا تحول دونه وهذا الضرب من المعرفة هو ما يحاول الكاتب القيام به في هذا الكتاب. وقد يجد القارئ ما يختلف به مع جاك مايلز، من رؤيته إلى العلاقة بين التميز والكونية إلى بعض المواضيع التي يتطرق بها إلى التاريخ، وإلى سوى ذلك. ولكن إذا كانت الكتابة لا تستقيم إلا بالاختلاف فإن هذا الكتاب يمضي بذلك إلى انعطافته الكبرى في تاريخ تناول النص وزاوية النظر وطريقة المقاربة والأسلوب ليدلف بنا إلى عالم كنا نظنه إلى مألوفاً فإذا بنا أمام مفاجأة في كل خطوة. وبهذا وسواه يحقق هذا الكتاب فرادته، ويغدو ضرورة لنا في قراءة واقعنا حيث بات لليهودية شأن آخر في الصراع العربي الإسرائيلي، وقبل ذلك وبعده، حيث الدين بعامة عنصر أساس، من الماضي إلى المستقبل.
