درج العلماء الذين كتبوا في علوم الدين على بيان الحقائق والأحكام والمعاني، وهم إذ كتبوا عن روح الأحكام وروح المعاني روح الحقائق فإنما يكتبونها بطريقة مختصرة تكون ملحقة بالحقائق وأخواتها، أما أن يفرد لروح الشريعة وأسرارها كتب يكون البحث في الروح والأسرار هو الأصل وما سواه تابع له فهذا قل أن قصده المؤلفون.
هذا وإن الإمام الدهلوي أفرد لروح الشريعة وأسرارها هذا السفر الضخم الذي بين أيدينا فأبدع إبداعا عظيماً شهد له بذلك كبار العلماء وحذوا حذوه وذلك لما يتصف به من خصائص ومميزات انفرد بها عن سائر الكتب التي عالجت أسرار أحكام الشريعة، فموضوعاته مبتكرة، وأسلوبه جيد، وعبارته عربية ناصعة واضحة رغم أن المؤلف هندي الأرومة لم يعرف بلاد العرب إلا زئراً لفترة محددة.
وبالرجوع لمضمون كتابه تجد أنه جاء مستعرضاً لحيثيات الشريعة الإسلامية: عقيدة وعبادات ومعاملات فكتب عن روح ذلك كله كتابة شيقة تدفع القارئ أن لا يدع الكتاب إذا أمسكه حتى ينتهي منه رغم أن أبحاثه تحتاج إلى فكر وتأمل، ولكن معالجة المؤلف الموضوعات بلباقة الكاتب المتمكن من مادته جعلت ما كان صعباً سهلاً على الفهم، حبيباً إلى نفس القارئ.
ونظراً لهذه المكانة التي يتمتع بها الكتاب بين أقرانه اعتنى الشيخ "محمد شريف شكر" بتحقيق مادته وبالتعليق عليه بما يلزم، وذلك بقصد إخراجه للقراء بحلة جديدة شكلاً وموضوعاً، وبالرجوع لنطاق عمله التحقيقي نجد أنه قد اعتنى بـ أولاً: وضع عناوين فرعية لموضوعات كل باب، ثانياً: اعتنى بتحقيق الآيات والأحاديث وتخريجها، ثالثاً: شرح غريب الكلمات، رابعاً: عرف بالشخصيات التي يتكرر ذكرها في الكتاب، خامساً: شرح المصطلحات العلمية التي تغيب عن غير العالم، سادساً: أكثر من الإشارات من فواصل ونقط وسواها، وهذا شيء مهم لفهم سياق المعنى.
