الكتاب عبارة عن مجموعة قصصية لمجموعة من مشاهير كتاب القرن التاسع عشر ومن بعض الكتّاب المخضرمين ممن حصلوا بجدارة على أرفع الجوائز الأدبية. وقد اختارت لها الكاتبة عنوان "الورقة الأخيرة" وهو عنوان إحدى قصص المجموعة. تقول الكاتبة عن المجموعة: "سوف يتبيّن للقارىء لدى مطالعته هذه القصص، بأن المشاعرالإنسانية ذاتها كانت ولاتزال تُوحّد البشر على مرّ العصور مع اختلاف أعراقهم وأجناسهم من أمل وقنوط - وفاء وجحود - كبرياء وتواضع - عطاء وأنانية - زهد وطمع - ندم وغفلة. وقد عبّر كل من أولئك الكتّاب عن هذه المشاعر بأسلوب رائع يُصوّر بكل دقّة وشفافية ردود أفعال المرء وأحاسيسه في مختلف المواقف مما يجعل القارىء ينتقل بخياله إلى العالم الذي جرت فيه الأحداث، كما أنه قد يجد فيها أحياناً ما يُعبّر بها عن نفسه."
