يعرض هذا الكتاب لظواهر لغوية كانت تبدو لي أيام دراستي للغة في مصر, في صورة مسائل توفر القدماء علي درسها, وفرغوا من بحثها, وفسروها لنا تفسيراً طمأنت إليه النفوس والأذهان.
وأغلب الظن أن أولئك الذين تقتصر دراستهم علي كتب الأقدمين من علماء العربية, لا يزالون حتي الآن يمطئنون إلي علاج هذه المسائل اللغوية علي النحو الذى جرى علية القدماء, ويقنعون بما جاء في كتبهم من شرح لها وتفسير, غير أني أعترف هنا أن ما كان يبدو لي في صورة مسائل لغوية قد أصبح الآن يتمثل لي في صورة مشكل لغوية لاتزال بحاجة إلي مزيد من الدارسة والتحقيق, ذلك بعد أن اتصلت بدراسات المستشرقين للغات السامية, ودراسات الغربيين للغاتهم الحديثة والقديمة, وما وصول إليه من نتائج علمية جليلة الشأن, فقد نهضت الدراسات الغوية المقارنة في جامعات أوروبا نهضة عظيمة خلال هذا القرن, وأصبح العلماء هناك يحكمون علي الظاهرة اللغوية في ضوء ظواهر اللغات الأخرى.
وقد حاولت في هذا الكتاب علاج تلك المشاكل اللغوية علاجاً علمياً حديثاً بعيداً عن الجدل العقيم, ومؤسساً علي أحدث النظريات التي اهتدي إليها المحدثون في الدراسات اللغوية.
