نبذة النيل والفرات: التصنيع هو توجيه الصناعة نحو تحقيق أهداف اجتماعية واقتصادية وسياسية وعلاوة على أنه عملية تزداد بها إنتاجية الفرد، وتتسع بها القدرة الصناعية، فهو كما يرى علماء الاجتماع عملية اجتماعية شاملة تتدرج وتسير وفق سياق معين تترابط حلقاته فيما بينها وتكون كل حلقة منها بدورها عملية فرعية بذاتها. والتصنيع عامل مهم في إحداث تغيرات في أحوالها الاجتماعية التي تتبلور في شكل مفاهيم وقيم وعادات وأعراف وتقاليد ونظم ومثل. أما العمران فالمقصود به هو "الإيكولوجيا البشرية" أو علم التبيؤ البشري وهو فرع منبثق من علم الاجتماع يعالج نمو الهيئة الاجتماعية وتنظيمها وتعنى أساساً بالعلاقات المكانية والزمانية التي تربط الجماعات بعضها ببعض. ومادة العمران أو الإيكولوجيا البشرية تختلف عن مادة التاريخ والجغرافيا والاقتصاد. يتألف الكتاب من أربعة أقسام: القسم الأول يتناول الصناعة في مصر ومدينة الإسكندرية في العصر الحديث ويهدف هذا القسم إلى وضع الأساس الذي ينبني عليه موضوع التصنيع والعمران ويبين هذا القسم مراحل تطور الصناعة في مصر الحديثة والإسكندرية كما يحلل الصناعة والمؤسسات الصناعية ويشير إلى مركز الصناعة في مصر والعوامل التي أدت إلى قيام الصناعة فيها. أما القسم الثاني فهو يبحث التصنيع والعمران في الإسكندرية في العصر الحديث ويحلل هذا القسم عمران مدينة الإسكندرية الحديثة ويشمل ذلك النمو العمراني لمدينة الإسكندرية منذ أوائل القرن التاسع عشر وحتى تاريخ إعداد الدراسة. أما القسم الثالث فهو مخصص لدراسة التصنيع وأحوال العمال الصناعيين في الإسكندرية وهو يعطي صورة مبسطة للأحوال الصناعية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية للعمال الصناعيين في الإسكندرية. أما القسم الرابع فهو يحتوي على أهم الاستنتاجات المستخلصة من البحث والتي تشكل إضافة معرفية هامة للمعرفة البشرية والعلوم الاجتماعية.
