أمريكا تظل في اللاهوت كما في السياسة، وعلى الرغم مما أرادت أن تعتقده، ابنة إنجلترا بالتأكيد لكنها نقحت الإرث الذي ورثته عنها، لكي تستجيب لحالة تاريخية مختلفة جداً؛ وعلى هذا النحو قدمت رواية جديدة لهذا الفكر اللاهوتي الذي أقام ما بين النص التوراتي وعلوم الطبيعة علاقة جديدة. وجاء كتاب أصل الأنواع (1859) عند نهاية القرن الأخير ليفاقم فيها أزمة فتحتها قبل ذلك، إنجازات الجيولوجيا، وإذا جرؤنا على القول، اكتشافات النقد التوراتي. وقد راهن "الأصوليون" البروتستانتي على معطيات ونتائج هذه الأزمة المتفاقمة واتخذوا موقفهم حيالها، ولأن الفكر السياسي الأمريكي أسس منذ البدايات وما بعد ثورة عام 1787 علاقة تعايش ما بين الدين والسياسة، فقد تورط اتخاذ الموقف هذا فقد تورط في لعبة القوى السياسية.. لنعبر الأطلسي، وهاهو داروين أمام الله. دومينيك ليكور
