حاولت هذه الدراسة، أن تكشف عن القسمات العامة للفلسفة النقدية لكل من الغزلي وكانط من إجراء المقارنة بينهما في ضوء الإتجاه النقدي لكل منهما في نظرية المعرفة بعامة، والموقف النقدي من الميتافيزيقا وقضاياها الأساسية بخاصة. وقد سوّغت الدراسة هذا الاختيار على أساس أن لكل من الغزالي أو كانط مثل مرحلة نقدية بحيث قسمت الفلسفة في عصرهما الى ما قبل النقد وبعده، بعد أن أبانت الدراسة عن الحالات النقدية التي سبقتهما، وأنهما مثلاً خاصة للعديد من المواقف التي سبقتهما في تاريخ الفلسفة، فمن خلال ما تناولته الدراسة في مدخلها، أبانت في قسمه الأول: عن حالات النقد والتقويم لليقين العقلي في نظرية المعرفة عموماً، والميتافيزيقا خصوصاً في الفلسفة قبل الغزالي وكانط، ووجدت أن صور هذه المراجعة تجلت بثلاثة مواقف أساسية، وهي: الموقف الشكي، والموقف اليقيني، والموقف القائل بتعادل الأدلة. كما أبانت الدراسة عن أثر الغزالي كذلك في العديد من فلاسفة العصر الحديث بصورة مباشرة أو غير مباشرة، ويأتي في مطلع هؤلاء: ديكارت وقبله مونتاني وباسكال وكذا مالبرانش وسبينوزا وهيوم وكانط اعتماداً على ما قدمته بعض الدراسات التي عنيت بالمقارنة بين الغزالي وبعض هؤلاء الفلاسفة. وهكذا إرتأت الدراسة أن الفجوة التاريخية قد سدت بين عصري الغزالي وكانط، من خلال التفاعل الثقافي الذي حدث بفعل حركة الاتصال بين العصر الوسيط والحديث مثلما فعلت حركة الترجمة من الاتصال بين فلاسفتنا وفلاسفة العصر اليوناني والروماني، وواصلت بيننا وبين فلاسفة العصر الوسيط اليهودي والمسيحي.
