يتساءل الناس عن أسباب تقدم الأمم وتأخرها، ولكل معياره الخاص في وزن هذا التقدم والتأخر، وكثيراً ما اختلفوا في هذا الأمر، فمنهم من رده إلى الله سبحانه وتعالى، فالعز منه، ولم يتحروا الأسباب. ونسي هؤلاء أن الله يعز من يشاء المعزة لنفسه ويسعى لذلك، ويذل من يشاء الذل لنفسه ولا يسعى لتغير واقعه، وتناسوا أننا كنا خير أمة أخرجت للناس. أدرك أولو الألباب من هذه الأمة أسباب تقدم الأمة وتأخرها، فمنهم من شق الطريق، وحارب من أجل تقدم الأمة متخذاً الأسباب، غير عابئ بالصعاب، فبدا نجماً مؤثراً في تاريخها كما سيظهر في هذا الكتاب، ومنهم من تقوقع حول أفكاره فما افاد، إما لأسباب نفسيه، أو لأسباب اجتماعية، أو لمخالفته أؤلى الأمر والنهي، فأحرف وأوصل إلى الجحيم مع أفكاره.
